Course Objectives

EL103 - Teaching Online: A Student-Centered Approach

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to author, teach, assess, and revise successful online courses. You will learn to develop a course framework with consistent modules. Constructing an online community and a dynamic syllabus are important in helping you communicate with students. You will also learn how to develop an assessment plan including self- and peer-assessment as you progress through the course. No online course is complete without a comprehensive revision cycle. This course will walk you through the process of "closing the loop" to create a complete revision and improvement plan for your online course. We will provide you with ideas for student-centered learning, with activities and intellectual interactions using a variety of technology tools.


Module 1: Authoring

  • Explain the importance of utilizing a course framework.
  • Describe the importance of testing a course-module template and course module.
  • Articulate the importance of course-module consistency.
  • Describe the learning-objects database and its function in an online course.

Module 2: Instructional Delivery

  • Examine the components of a dynamic syllabus.
  • Recognize the importance of building an online learning community.
  • Describe the importance of effective communication.
  • Discuss the importance of scaffolding learning.

Module 3: Assessment Plan

  • Describe the elements of an assessment plan (formative and summative).
  • Articulate the role of rubrics in assessment.
  • Compare and contrast self- and peer-assessment.
  • Identify components of meaningful feedback.

Module 4: Course Revision and Improvement

  • Evaluate the revision cycle (i.e., 'close the loop').
  • Identify and reflect upon challenges during the authoring, teaching, and assessment processes in the online environment.
  • Analyze multiple evaluations during course revision cycle.
