EL106 - Evaluating Student Learning in Online Courses

This course will provide you with the knowledge to effectively evaluate student learning in an online environment. Technology tools play a vital role in the evaluation process and several are discussed in this module. Discussion will also be provided to help you further understand how to complete formative and summative assessments, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of objective and subjective assessments. Value-added assessments are also discussed in light of how they can be completed and provide feedback for course revision.


Module 1: Technology Tools for Assessing Student Learning

  • Recognize the importance of technology tools in the evaluation process.
  • Examine specific functions of a technology tool to facilitate evaluation.
  • Identify the pros and cons of technology tools for evaluation.
  • Reflect on tool effectiveness for evaluation to ensure proper usage.

Module 2: Diagnostic, Formative and Summative Assessment

  • Develop a working definition for assessment and evaluation.
  • Develop a working definition of diagnostic assessment.
  • Establish use for formative assessment.
  • Establish use for summative assessment.

Module 3: Objective and Subjective Assessment

  • Recognize validity and reliability of assessments.
  • Establish use for objective assessments.
  • Establish use for subjective assessments.
  • Compare and contrast norm- and criterion-referenced assessments.

Module 4: Value Added Assessment

  • Define value-added assessment.
  • Explain alternative and authentic assessment.
  • Discuss the use of rubrics in assessment.
  • Discuss course revisions in light of assessment data.
