ED117 - Teaching Gen Y Students
Generation Y students are often associated with their use of technology. While technology is an essential part of their lives, there is much more to know about Gen Y learners. This course gives a profile of Generation Y learners and how they relate to other generational learners in the classroom. Strategies are given for engaging Gen Y students in the learning process while building on their abilities to use social networks, portable media and personal interaction. Instructors of Gen Y students are given methods that can be used to help them develop the critical thinking and interpersonal skills needed for many of todays careers.
Module 1: Understanding Generational Differences - Identify the 4 primary generations within America today.
- Explain the importance of understanding generational differences.
- Describe the general characteristics of the Veterans, Boomers and Gen X.
- Discuss the general educational methods used for the 3 earlier generations.
- List the primary characteristics of Generation Y.
Module 2: Learning Preferences of Generation Y Students - List the preferred learning methods of the earlier 3 generations.
- Identify the preferred learning methods of Generation Y students.
- Compare and contrast the learning preferences of the generations.
- Assess differences in the instructor's learning preferences and those of Generation Y students.
- Describe three areas of opportunity for reaching Generation Y learners.
Module 3: Generation Y & Technology - Define and describe the terms 'digital native' and 'digital immigrant.'
- List 3-4 current technologies that can be utilized in the classroom.
- Identify methods of incorporating technology into class management.
- Describe potential dangers of incorporating technology.
Module 4: Instructional Strategies for Gen Y Learners - List ways of engaging Generation Y students.
- Identify ways to facilitate the development of Gen Y critical thinking skills.
- Describe use of the performance contract in instructing Generation Y students.
- Design an effective learning experience for the Generation Y student.
