Course Objectives

ED119 - Using Technology to Engage and Educate

This course is an overview of a variety of ways in which educators can infuse technology and web resources into every day curriculum, to engage learners and promote collaborative learning. A variety of resources and suggestions are contained within this course, allowing everyone from the novice to the technology expert to take away what is appropriate for them, their students, and the course, in order to integrate 21st century teaching resources and practices in a practical and beneficial manner.


Module 1: 21st Century Teaching and Learning

  • Recognize the role technology plays in the 21st century classroom.
  • Recognize prevalent learning theories and constructs applicable in the digital age.
  • Identify key resources available to educators to enhance the learning experience.
  • Identify the appropriate resources necessary to incorporate new technologies into the classroom.
  • Know the terms associated with new media.

Module 2: Manage, Share and Organize Information

  • Know how to integrate blended-learning techniques into a traditional ‘brick and mortar’ learning environment.
  • Know how instant news streams and wikis work and how they keep students and instructors current.
  • Identify presentation development tools and their features.
  • Use technology to share, organize, and display resources, and to create content.
  • Identify available tools used to create digital presentations that demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a subject.

Module 3: Collaborative Learning

  • Identify available and appropriate social networking resources that will facilitate technology-based learning.
  • Identify ways in which virtual worlds and simulations can promote engagement and mimic real-world scenarios in a safe, cost-effective environment.
  • Recognize the benefits of blogging and how it encourages participation and organizing thoughts.
  • Better understand how Twitter works and how it may contribute to active learning in and out of the classroom.
  • Recognize the benefits of introducing teleconferencing and video streaming into the 21st century classroom.

Module 4: Where to Begin

  • Recognize how digital games and quizzes can better engage learners.
  • Learn how to locate educational videos on the web.
  • Recognize the value of podcasts, eBooks, and ancillary materials that often accompany college textbooks.
  • Understand fair use and copyright laws as they apply to education.
  • Identify professional organizations that support incorporating technology in the classroom.
